Birthday present for Jan Dits, painter and jazz drummer. This last point explains the strong rhythmical aspect of the Etude, although that is the only relation with jazz music you will find in the piece. The title is in retrospect a bit dull may be, but in the rush to complete the score and recording in time for the party I could not think of anything better. The title of the painting Jan presented me on my next birthday in return, is on the other hand much more imaginative: Old masters 1978. It depicts the two of us during an intermission at the first public performance (with a jazz quartet) where we played together (which was in 1978).
