Blues

The JD in the title is Jean-Denis Lepage (painter, illustrator, musician and writer of books about fortifications). Though living in the Netherlands Jean-Denis is originally from France and this explains the hint at the Marseillaise in measure 70. This hint is incidentally in the key (F sharp) that is furthest away from the root key of the piece (C) so as to enhance the effect of alienation. The Blues (for JD) is one of my first works in which I applied twelve tone rows (within a tonal environment that is). This is especially visible in the closing chord of the piece (made out of the twelve different notes). Typically (for me) the form of this blues consists of two corresponding parts where in the second one many of the motives from the first one reappear in their inverted configuration.
