I wrote the 39 steps polka originally for piano solo as a present for the 39th birthday (hence the title and hence the number of measures) of Jean-Denis Lepage (painter, illustrator, musician and writer of books about fortifications). I created this version for piano duet on special request of the Piano Duo Brkovich (Maja and Goran - listen on their site how well they play) from Belgrade. The challenge was to preserve the light and transparent character of the piece.
